Questions About Your Plumbing Academy

No. Plumbing Basics for Beginners assumes no experience at all. You need to be able to read and write in English, use a smartphone, tablet or computer, and have regular internet access. More advanced courses, such as Plumbing Regulations & Compliance and Trade Test Preparation, work best if you already have some site experience or have completed the earlier courses.
Once your payment is confirmed, you log in to your student account and start straight away. Each module has short video lessons, a downloadable study guide and a quiz to check your understanding. You study when it suits you, on your phone, tablet or computer, and your progress is saved as you go. If you get stuck, our tutors are available by email and WhatsApp during office hours.
Yes. Plumbing is a hands-on trade, so every course includes practical tasks, such as cutting and jointing copper and PVC pipe, setting a drainage fall or assembling a geyser valve set on a practice board. You complete them with a practice kit, or on a real job under supervision, then upload photos or a short video for a tutor to assess. You need to pass the practical assessments to complete the course.
Each course has an access period, from 2 months for Leak Detection & Repairs to 12 months for Trade Test Preparation. Most courses run for 3 to 6 months if you study about 4 to 6 hours a week, and you can finish sooner if you have more time. Need longer? Contact us before your access period ends to ask about an extension.
Yes. When you have completed all the modules and passed the practical assessments, you receive a Certificate of Completion that lists the course and the skills covered. A certificate of completion is not the same as a trade qualification or PIRB registration (see the next question). [Add your accreditation or registration details here]
Not on its own. In South Africa you become a qualified plumber by passing the plumbing trade test, which requires the right theory as well as practical workplace experience. Experienced workers without formal papers may be able to qualify through Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL). To work independently and issue plumbing Certificates of Compliance, you must also register with the PIRB (Plumbing Industry Registration Board) in the right category. Our courses build the knowledge and practical skills you need along that route, and Trade Test Preparation helps you get ready for the test itself. Requirements can change, so always confirm the current rules with a trade test centre and the PIRB.
Our geyser course teaches how hot water systems work and what a correct installation looks like under SANS 10254, including pressure control valves, safety valves, vacuum breakers and drip trays. Always switch off the power to an electric geyser at the distribution board before any work starts. A geyser installation or replacement must be done or signed off by a registered plumber, who issues a plumbing Certificate of Compliance, and gas work may only be done by a registered gas practitioner. Our courses do not cover gas installations.
You can pay securely online at checkout, or by EFT using the details on our Banking Details page. Selected courses can also be paid in instalments: Domestic Water Supply & Pipework and Geyser Installation & Hot Water Systems in 3 instalments, and Trade Test Preparation in 4. Choose the instalment option when you add the course to your cart; the course is delivered in stages as each instalment is paid and confirmed. New students can use the code WELCOME10 for 10% off their first order.
For the theory you only need a phone, tablet or computer with internet access. We send you a full list for your course when you enrol. The Apprentice Starter Tool Kit and the Pipe Cutting & Fitting Practice Kit in our shop cover most of it.
